Abene Festival 2006

This wonderful festival has been running every year for over a decade now. Based in the coastal village of Abene, in the Cassamance region of Senegal, it is just a few hours drive from Banjul airport in The Gambia.

Recover from the flight with us in Bakau, before takling the long drive, on bad roads under hot sun.

We are offering those attending the festival a discount on our usual accomodation rates. Spend weeks or just a day or two with us in Bakau, the Gambia, acclimatising & getting relaxed, unwinding from the 'western stress' we all suffer, before taking the trip south to the extremely laid-back atmosphere in Abene.

We can supply you with totally trustworthy, excellent drivers, who are also very nice people, to take you to Abene. You can go with cold drinks stored in the boot & a packed luch, if you wish. We are experts with vegetarian versions of African food, which is almost impossible to find generally in West Africa. So veggies / vegans will be in safe hands with us;  able to completely relax & enjoy all our meals.

Consider us a bridge between cultures, gently helping you adjust to Senegambian ways before you go on to the depths of Cassamance & Abene. We hope you will appreciate our facilities in The Gambia; 20 minutes drive from the Airport & 10 minutes walk from the sea. We can meet you at the airport, introduce you to the culture & music of the region, then drive you down to the Abene Festival. How long you stay with us is up to you, but charter flights are arriving on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays in The Gambia & Abene festival starts on a Sunday.

Abene festival starts on Xmas eve this year. There is also a shorter, smaller Roots music festival in Bakau just prior to that. So come to Bakau for the little event then go on to the big one in Abene straight afterwards. Dates for Abene are December 24th to January 6th. Check their website at www.alnaniking.co.uk

Our rates are negotiable, depending on whether you want room only or full board & if you are veggie or not. Group and couples discounts also apply, so contact us with full details of your situation & requirements & we'll 'quote you happy.'

Kartong Festival
We've received great reports of last years event in Kartong. This Festival is held in a village almost on the border of Cassamance & The Gambia. I think it was held mid-March last time [2006] & I've just received dates  for the next one.

The biennial 'Roots Festival'.

The roots festival is for anyone interested in the Culture of West Africa, but is especially aimed at people of African descent living in the diaspora. It hopes to offer you an opportunity to reunite with your roots in Africa.

The very varied programme includes music, excursions, lectures and workshops. It takes place, every year, in early June. We are awaiting details and confirmation of dates for the 2008 festival at the moment and will post all here ASAP. Provisional dates are 30th May to 7th June 2008.
